5 Free Subdomain Providers for Your Next Project

By Luke McCrea -

As a developer, sometimes you need a place to put your project, but you don’t want to pay for a domain. Lucky for you, I’ve compiled a list of 5 amazing subdomain providers for your next project! If you’re looking for even more afer reading this list, check out my open source project, Free Subdomains for a list of many free subdomain providers.

#1 js.org

js.org

JS.org has been around for a long time and is one of the most popular providers on this list. They offer free subdomains for projects that are related to JavaScript. For example, discord.js.org, uses js.org.

Creating a subdomain with js.org is really easy and simple. All you have to do is create a pull request on their repository, adding your subdomain and you’re done!

#2 thedev.id

thedev.id

Thedev.id provides you with a free domain, typically for your personal website. This is useful if want a personal website but still want that feeling of your own custom domain.

Creating a subdomain with thedev.id is very similar to js.org. You simply make a pull request in their repository!

#3 is-an.app

is-an.app

Is-an.app is great for any general project you have. It is not restriced to projects of only a certain type and is open to personal websites, apps, and more!

To create a subdomain with is-an.app simply create a pull request in their repository.

#4 wip.la and cluser.ws

I’ve grouped wip.la and cluster.ws together because they have the same provider. Although these domains aren’t as easy and memorable as js.org, these subdomains still have much to offer. They don’t have very many restrictions so they can be used for a wide range of projects.

If you want to create a subdomain with wip.la or cluster.ws, you’ll need to make a pull request in their repository.

#5 github.io

Github Pages

Finally, we have github.io. This subdomain is provided by Github as you may have guessed. Github.io subdomains can only be used for sites hosted with Github Pages. Although this does limit you, there are still plenty of apps and projects that use github.io subdomains. What site are you going to make?
